Friends and family remember Christian Actor Brad Renfro

Source: Knoxville News

Tears flowed and comfort was shared as friends and family came together Monday night to remember Brad Renfro.

The 25-year-old actor died Jan. 15 in Los Angeles, but his body came home to rest. His immediate family received condolences from hundreds during Monday’s visitation at Stevens Mortuary in North Knoxville.

A bright, simple arrangement with red, white and yellow flowers framed against greenery adorned the closed casket, while a photograph of a young, happy Renfro stood nearby.

For nearly three hours, Renfro’s father and stepmother, Mark and Kim Renfro, and his mother, Angel Olsen, clasped hands and exchanged hugs with the approximately 600 well-wishers who came through the receiving line. Also on hand were the actor’s maternal grandmother, Judy Hurt, half-sister Haley Olsen, and stepbrother Dane Hoffmeister. His paternal grandmother, Joanne Renfro, who reared Renfro from the age of 5, was too ill to attend.

The mourners who wound through the hallways of the mortuary were solemn and silent. Only in the reception room did a buzz arise as the sad occasion served as a reunion with mixed emotions for friends and family. About half of those present seemed to be peers of the parents, with most of the rest closer in age to Renfro. (more…)

American Idol Contestant Mocked for Christian Beliefs by Idol Host

Source: Cybercast News Service

At the Dallas auditions for the 2008 season of “American Idol” last Wednesday, 19-year-old Bruce Dickson discovered that his singing wasn’t the only thing that got a no vote from the judges, who also questioned his decision to “save everything for that one special woman.”

When Dickson, from Bastrop, Texas, was asked to share something about himself, he said he’d never kissed a girl.

“What?” Randy Jackson asked. “On purpose?”

On purpose,” Dickson said. “On my wedding day, that will be my first kiss.”

Jackson’s advice to Dickson after the judges sent him packing: “Go kiss some girls.”

Simon Cowell, eyebrows raised, told him: “Avoid Ryan (Seacrest) on the way out.” (more…)

Dungy’s life work begins after football but NFL lucky to have him

In the penultimate paragraph of his best-selling book, “Quiet Strength,” a work whose subject matter certainly transcends the folly and fleeting stardom of sport, Tony Dungy wrote this: “I coach football. But the good I can do to glorify God along the way is my real purpose.”

For one more year at least, perhaps even a little longer than that, Dungy will continue to moonlight in those pursuits, to address with great purpose the duality of his life, and to chase both his ultimate vocation and his higher-profile avocation.

And for at least one more season we’re all the richer for it.

The former means serving his maker by bearing witness to his deep-rooted faith. The latter encompasses scratching the itch that on Monday precluded Dungy from simply walking away from the game that has been such an integral part of his life since he was persuaded by a respected educator and friend to rejoin the Parkside High School football team for his senior season, after he had quit in protest when his best friend was not elected a captain. Super Bowl Event Showcases Players’ Faith

Source: CBN News

When tuning in to the Super Bowl, visions of fierce clashes, halftime commercials and raging parties often fill our heads. The last thing many would consider the event to be is a Christian outreach.

But the Christian sports ministry, Athletes in Action, uses the Super Bowl as an opportunity for sports fans to fellowship with present and former National Football League stars and to hear their stories.

The day before the New England Patriots go head-on with the New York Giants at the University of Phoenix Stadium on February 3, the 2008 Athletes in Action Super Bowl Breakfast will be held in Phoenix and simulcasted to churches across the nation.

It is now one of the premier events held during Super Bowl week. (more…)
